Professor Dr. Bashir Ahmad
Personal Experience & Biography
Dr. Bashir Ahmad is a senior psychiatrist, psychotherapist and academician with extensive experience in clinical psychiatry, medical education, and psychotherapy training. He currently serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Psychiatry at Kabir Medical College, Gandhara University, Peshawar, Pakistan. He is also chief Executive of Bashir Psychiatric Hospital Institute Peshawar.
He completed his MBBS in 1989, followed by a Diploma in Psychological Medicine (DPM) in 1993 and FCPS in Psychiatry in 2000. He later obtained the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in Psychiatry in England. Dr. Ahmad further specialized in psychotherapy by completing a Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy from King’s College London, United Kingdom, in 2007, and is accredited by the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP), England. He also holds a Postgraduate Certification in Medical and Dental Education from Oxford Brooke’s University, England (2010).
Dr. Ahmad has extensive clinical experience in Pakistan’s major teaching hospitals. He has worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist at Government Mental Hospital Peshawar, Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar, and Khyber Medical College Peshawar. Prior to his current position, he served at Professor of Psychiatry at Khyber Teaching Hospital and Khyber Medical College, Peshawar where he worked for more than 15 years.
Earlier in his career, he worked as a Substantive Consultant Psychiatrist at Milton Keynes Hospital, NHS England, where he also served as a Clinical and Educational Supervisor, training numerous MRCPsych trainees. He remained Lead consultant of the Mitlon kyenes hospital trust in clinical Audit and clinical Governance for 2 years. His clinical services were recognized with the Clinical Excellence Award for two consecutive years (2008 and 2009).
Dr. Ahmad has made significant contributions to psychiatric education and professional training in both the United Kingdom and Pakistan. In Pakistan, he has trained more than 40 postgraduate psychiatric trainees and over 200 trainees in Cognitive Behaviour Therapies (CBT) through structured training and supervision programs.
He serves as an examiner for the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) and has played an important role in postgraduate psychiatric training and assessment across the country. He has also served as Vice President of the Pakistan Psychiatric Society, contributing to the development of mental health services and professional standards in Pakistan.
In recognition of his professional achievements and clinical services, the Royal College of Psychiatrists, United Kingdom, conferred upon him the title of “Specialist Associate” in 2007.
Dr. Ahmad is widely recognized as a pioneer of structured Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) training in Pakistan, having established certified postgraduate Certificate and Diploma courses in CBT, which have significantly contributed to the development of evidence-based psychotherapeutic practice in the country.
He has authored more than a dozen research publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals and continues to contribute to academic development in psychiatry, psychotherapy, and medical education. In recognition of his lifelong contributions to mental health services and education, he has also been awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award by Dow University of Health Sciences.
